Today we are going to remove the background of the following photo.
To begin with, use the Pen Tool to select the majority of the area you want to keep.
No need to make it very precise.
Go to the Paths channel and click the button "Load path as a selection". (Windows > Paths)
You should see something like this.
Go to "Select" > "Modify" > "Feather" and give it a value "2".
Go back the the layer channel. (Windows > layers)
Copy the selected area and paste it on a new layer.You should see something like this.
(bottom layer is hided for better illustration)
Go to the "Channels" layer. (Windows > Channels)
Copy the blue channel.
Go to "Image" > "Adjustments" > "Invert"

Go to "Image" > "adjustments" > "Levels"
Change the 3 values below to "0", "1" and "149".
Press "control" on your keyboard and left-click the copied blue channel.
Make all the channels visible except the copied blue one.
Go back to "layer 0"
Copy the selected area and paste it on a new layer (Layer 2 in our case).
Insert a background you want and put it under layer 2.
Go to "Layer" > "Matting" > "Removing White Matte"
Make Layer 1 visible and it is finished
We can see that the effect is quite awesome.
